You probably should update the docs on using mapserver if you haven't already to include geography.

GeoServer works for geometry types, but does not recognize geography columns.

MapServer works without issue, including on geography columns. You must set the SRID explicitly in the DATA statement to use geography: DATA "geog from thetable using srid=4326 using unique gis"
