clear postgis as tiles become too large

Description
I'm using mapnik with a postgis database, and I've encountered errors installing it again. I'd been trying to clear out tiles as they become stale, in order to save space.
How do I fix both problems?
(I realize the bug tracker is not always appropriate, but it's something)
